David Claerbaut, Founder

Dr. ClaerbautReceiving his first full-time academic appointment at the tender age of 24, Dr David Claerbaut has enjoyed a diverse academic and professional career involving Christian colleges and major research universities.

He holds an undergraduate degree from Calvin College, an M.A. from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. from Loyola University of Chicago.

Dr. Claerbaut served as the Chair of the Sociology/Anthropology Department at North Park University in Chicago.  He has also taught at DePaul University, the graduate school of Loyola University in Chicago, the Chicago Semester, and SCUPE (Seminary Consortium in Urban Pastoral Education), in Chicago, Illinois.  He has also been a lecturer in the medical school at the University of Chicago.   He is an adjunct faculty member at Grand Canyon University, teaching graduate and undergraduate classes in psychology and sociology.

While in private practice, Dr. Claerbaut treated a number of professional athletes and was a radio psychotherapist on Chicago’s WIND-AM.

He is the author of more than ten books in sociology, counseling psychology, urban ministry, and business.  The reaction to his book, Faith and Learning on the Edge: A Bold New Look at Religion in Higher Education (Zondervan, 2004), is a motivating force behind this website.

Dr. Claerbaut was awarded the Key to the City of Indianapolis for his work there.

From 2000 to 2008, Dr. Claerbaut served as Teaching Pastor at the Bridge Church near in Chicago’s Wrigleyville community.

Dr. Claerbaut’s hobby is sports.  He was the Athletic Director at North Park in 1987 when the men’s basketball team won the NCAA championship.  He later did volunteer coaching of men’s varsity high school basketball.  His teams won conference championships each of his last three full seasons.  Dr. Claerbaut coached the 2009 Andre Agassi Prep team to the Nevada state championship game.

He has also written a number of popular adult sports books including Bart Starr, Recruting Confidential, and The NBA Analyst. 

Dr. Claerbaut lives in Las Vegas with his wife Rita.  A daughter who graduated from George Washington University Law School is in private practice in Chicago, a son–who graduated from Harvard–works in New York City, another son is in private business in Michigan, and still another is a student at Northwestern University.
